The New Moon in Capricorn falls on the Winter Solstice this year marking a time of changing seasons in sync with the lunar cycles. During the Capricorn/Saturn ruled cycle and the winter season, the days are at their shortest and the nights at their darkest and coldest of the year. Is it any wonder that the celebration of Christmas and the holiday festivities of lights, bright warm colors and celebrations seems to be the perfect set up to help offset the darkness and bitterness of winter.
The New Moon in Capricorn is ruled by Saturn. The Moon in Capricorn is in its detriment where the natural sentiment and warmth of the Moon, ruled by Cancer is subject to stricter and more stringent emotional expression. Saturn (Capricorn-Paternal Father) and the Moon (Cancer-Mother maternal) are literally poles apart representing the parental axis. Capricorn is equated with the work ethic and achievement, status, careers, responsibility, discipline and how we make ourselves a place in the world. The Capricorn Moon tends to the cold, brittle, dry, stern side often far removed from the Cancer warmth of the hearth, home and nurture. Capricorn rules over the bones, skin, hair, knees and old age. Chronic conditions present themselves with a Capricorn nature that is slow building and degenerative often with dry skin, dry hair, brittleness, arthritis and osteoporosis.
Capricorn wisdom has appreciation for all seasons of life where darkness has its own richness and lessons. Depression and grief is part of the natural cycle of life with all the hills and valleys teaching the virtue of tests, tradition and time. Capricorn doesn’t take a detour to the easy road and goes the extra mile and to keep keeping on no matter the hurdles and roadblocks. Saturn ruled Capricorn reminds us of the seriousness of life and with it the natural consequences, repercussions, pay backs and karma in one way or another paying the price with no escape from remorse, taking responsibility or facing the music with a conscience living with or without any regret.
Saturn of all the planets tends to ring in the ding dong theory with cause and effect. Saturn is the last of the planets with a mundane influence due to its earth influence which has a more direct influence on earthly matters including mortality and the finality of life. The outer planets beyond Saturn such as Uranus Neptune and Pluto are more out of our control tending to operate from a spiritual perspective beyond a living consciousness.
Capricorn is the worldly, the ambitious, the boss, the authority, the dominant parent or father, the protector, the provider, the one on top seeking status and acclaim always climbing the mountain top on each stepping stone, to the highest ground. Capricorn rules the 10th house of the chart and with it the gradual slow and steady climb to the top, to greatness, a calling, personal best and a sense of mastery. Capricorns darker side is all for profit and gain and with it the superficial snobbery of having and lording over those not having whether in keeping up with the Joneses, upward social mobility, status and position, for that bigger house, more luxurious car, fancy clothes and jewels, more accumulation of wealth and material comforts, more social status and anything outside the self that makes one feel secure and valued.
The New Moon in Capricorn can seem like the Charlie Brown or Debbie Downer Moon, with head down,” what’s the use”, under a black cloud, melancholy, maudlin, working quietly and diligently behind the scenes, stoic and often suffering in silence with only misery as company. Charlie Brown`s slumped mood seeks the deeper meaning of the holiday season with a quiet observance about the substance and conscientious spirit of the season aside from all the commercialization, superficiality and increased spending for more gifts and more stuff.
Saturn ruling Capricorn moves into Sagittarius December 24th where the bah humbug and any happy is stymied by the grimness of Saturn stunting any Sagittarius joy or belief. Saturn is a sad lot in Sagittarius as the natural hopefulness and exuberance is squelched by Saturn’s sardonic surliness taking over any silliness, all with a necessary dose of Saturn boundaries or on the flip side where no Saturn will have any power over Sagittarius with judgement, moderation sadly lacking.
Whether this year’s holiday celebrations brings the blues, bah humbug, cheer or a warm glow, when it comes to the yearly special shows, those that hold the most meaning seem to be those that express and overcome hard Saturn reality. The classics of Scrooge with the miserly, greed, loneliness and avarice, the Grinch and the mean, hateful and nasty, It’s A Wonderful Life with despair and hopelessness, Rudolf the Red Nose reindeer being bullied for his nose so bright and a Miracle on 34th street believing in intangibles and magic above the sensory earth facts we can touch see feel smell taste.
All seriousness aside, Christmas comes with a dysfunctional light kicker with an Aquarius Moon and Uranus unexpected and weird. Uranus turns direct and strains Mercury where a speak uneasy and unhinged add a sprinkle of unusual delight at the dinner table with more of the heckle the halls with balls of folly slinging obscenities after copious cups leading to mutterings of peck the balls in halls with Molly. More fun is to be had sitting at the kiddy table, as the blarney belching fest expels once again as per tradition with grumbling grannies and screaming, naughty children knudged by Santa’s own knee jerk style.
After all the celebrations and jolly mixing, the silent still night under a New Moon darkest sky of the year brings a special view of twinkling stars with quiet moments to reflect on and make a special wish. The Star of Bethlehem followed by the three wise men (Babylonian astrologers) guided to hope, protection, safety and faith. The New Moon makes a perfect harmonious trine to fixed star Regulus where some scholarly study and theory points to Regulus equated with the Star of Bethlehem as Regulus is the brightest star in the night sky and known as the most fortunate of fixed stars of kings.
